The aspiring barrister’s journey

⭐️ Aspiring barrister

The legal profession in England and Wales is split into two branches; solicitors and barristers. At this stage A-level/law students are exploring the unique world of the Bar, completing mini-pupillages and deciding whether to pursue a career at the Bar.

🎓 Student barrister

Upon deciding on the barrister route, aspiring barristers apply to enrol on the bar course to complete the vocational component which is a pre-requisite to become a barrister.

⚖️ Pupil barrister

After successfully completing the bar course you are called to the Bar of England and Wales (graduation ceremony). The next stage is to secure pupillage with an Authorised Education and Training Organisation (AETO) such as chambers, in the final step to becoming a barrister.

👨‍⚖️ Qualified barrister

After completing pupillage which is a recognised period of training by the Bar Standards Board, you will qualify as a practising barrister at the Bar of England and Wales.
